DevonThink Pro usage notes

This thread in the DevonThink forums talks about various uses of DTP, but focusing on the “how to organize your Devon Think library.” There are multiple ways, each having its benefits — after all YOU need to be working with it, so in a way the structure might resemble the way you think or work. But it all comes down to utilizing the powers of teh DevonThink AI: group stuff together that needs to be grouped. Group similar stuff. File Things wherever they might belong. This way the AI learns and will help you later when filing new stuff where it might belong to.

You could also tag your files (e.g. via their comments) and then grab the tagged files via a smart folder (see 43Folders for a detailed article on this). btw a very useful feature that can also be used in Finder.app: You can very easily set finder/spotlight comments via a Quicksilver-Plugin and then assemble all related items with a smart folder (or saved search from spotlight). e.g. I have a projects.smartfolder that contains all my current projects’ folders (tagged with “@project,” of course), no matter where they are. You could also be more specific and just get all files tagged with “@recipe” and “@baking”… you get the idea.

EasyFind

This app by DEVONtechnologies is a good tool when you have Spotlight disabled because of performance problems. It gives you back basic (or not so basic) search functions.

(Why would you need to disable spotlight? I have had major performance problems with spotlight - up to the point where iTunes would not play songs without stuttering anymore. So I just killed Spotlight. Now I can find stuff again. Good.)

Spotlight tagging & dashboard widget

Head over to terhech.de and grab the TafBag, a Dashboard widget that lets you access your spotlight-tagged files and folders. Flickr for Finder, yeah.

Spotlight - Be gone!

As mentioned on MacFixIt - Troubleshooting Solution for the Macintosh Spotlight is hogging my system, too. Until apple fixes this my /etc/hostconfig has its Spotlight turned off.

Mac OSX Tiger 10.4 BETA?!

Software Request: Spotlight tagger à la del.icio.us

To all the smart Cocoa-coders out there: How about creating a little app for OSX Tiger that provides an interface like the experimental del.icio.us pop for simple creation of spotlight tags for files & folders?!

The major requirements I can think of are:

  1. make it easy to summon the window, key-cut, gesture or context menu (or via quicksilver?)
  2. make addition of tags as easy as selecting already existing tags: see del.icio.us or flickr
  3. save a list of previously used tags in a .txt file somewhere for easy editing (also via quicksilver)
  4. When you are done boast to apple about boosting spotlight’s features.

(see Google Groups : 43 Folders for some more ideas/explanations)

Oh, while you are at it - please add iTunes and iPhoto tagging (with the same tags) as well ;)
