What if:

Pandora technology is integrated into iTunes and iTMS. For 15 €/month you can subscribe to three pandora stations (which are defined and modified via iTunes playlists and ratings), whose songs you get like a subscription based service. Protected AAC files that expire once your subscription is over. BUT the selling point will be: you can select 10 songs each month that you can keep like any other song purchased at iTMS.

Subscribing to these pandora stations is as easy as using a podcast, in fact the streams are podcasts with, say, 10 new songs a day.

Just dreaming.

Andy Budd has a very awesome tutorial on advanced smart playlists. Definitely worth checking out. And if this is way too complicated for you: check out Smart Playlists.com

btw: my personal hint for all of you using smart playlists and iTunes ratings. Use Applescripts to transfer your ratings to the MP3 file’s ID3tag’s comments section. This way you will never lose those ratings even if you are moving your tunes from mac to mac…

Ⅰ just realized a very useful feature for filling my iPod: you can have multiple playlists inside a folder, but cannot select the folder to be automatically synched with the iPod. However what you can do is create a smart playlist that contains the folder’s contents! So now it is very easy to drag stuff to the iPod without actually changing its „synch settings“. Just drag a new playlist into the synched folder and it will appear on the iPod as soon as the next synch will be done.

Apple has done it again. This is the new look, possibly for all other iLife apps, Safari and all other brushed metal apps? What may look cool might become stale pretty soon. Inconsistencies in Apple’s GUI design have been appearing for years now – long gone are the days where all apps were equal; where is the updated Human Interface Guideline? Does Apple still adhere to its own standards?

Somehow Ⅰ am always stunned by Apple’s fresh design whenever they change things. It still looks a lot better than anything else – and actually there is no alternative. But Ⅰ am getting annoyed at the inconsistency as well as the diversity within Apple’s own product portfolio. Change is good, but a lack of focus and direction is not.

What Ⅰ do not like:

podcasts are very separate from the rest of iTunes. There is no way of creating a smart playlist for podcasts.

there is no per-podcast setting

there is no way of saying: „take the most current podcast with a hit counter of 0“

how do Ⅰ get old podcasts into the system and make them bookmarkable?

As Ⅰ have written previously Ⅰ would love to have some way of tagging functionality in iTunes.

Right now my setting looks a bit like this:

Ⅰ use the „Grouping“ field for my tags. The tags Ⅰ am currently using are things like „slow fox“ or „rumba“ as Ⅰ am currently cataloging my collection of ballroom dance music. But Ⅰ will be using tags like „electro“ or „typical latino“ or whatever to actually describe the styles of the songs – just to get much better and faster search functionality when Ⅰ really need to find some music that is similar, e.g. when Ⅰ am preparing music to play at a dancesport competition.

There are some cool apple scripts out that allow adding and deleting single tags from the fields „grouping“ or „comments“. The scripts Ⅰ use are really useful, but far from really what Ⅰ want (see below). Nevertheless – they are pretty close in functionality and the only thing that is out there (yet.)

What Ⅰ really would like:

A posting interface like the experimental posting popup from del.icio.us. The features Ⅰ want are:

simple tag creation. just type the tag into some form field and it is created

re-use of old tags. show a list of tags that Ⅰ have used before, and make them clickable!

make the selected tags stand out from the list so Ⅰ can de-select them again!

Some additional features for the interface:

Give me the choice to group tags. e.g. „Dance“ (would group Waltz, Cha-cha, Salsa). This way Ⅰ can easily select tags that are sorted in categories.

Give me the choice to rename tags easily.

Some other stuff Ⅰ would love to do with these tags:

playlist creation based on tags – easy, fast and useful – a „there is no step 3″-approach.

find similarities based on tags, make music recommendations, hey, make shuffle take into account music similarity and/or diversity! (How about a setting that goes like: shuffle my music, make 5 songs similar then completely switch to a different style and do another 5 songs!)

What Ⅰ would truly love is to have some kind of tag system in iTunes. The classification „genre“ doesn’t just make it anymore. When you have classical music you can have all sorts of styles, moods and whatever. Ⅰ do need some other way to find the music ⅰ want, create playlists automatically with a certain set of style, mood and genre. Right now my music is classified by genre like this: „Electronic – Latin“, which makes this better – but then this clutters up the interface, the list of genres at my iPod etc. Tagging or „keywords“ as it is called in iPhoto would be it. Hey, one could even link up tags in iPhoto and iTunes in order to find the best music for a slideshow or – the other way round – find good pictures for iTunes visualizer! Maybe the whole thing with Flickr-integration?
Ⅰ wish there was some way to ping apple about this – but since Ⅰ am not really fond of their feature request system (no trackback and usually no feedback) this one goes out to lazyweb.

[update 2005–05–15]
A great how-to on tagging in iTunes can be found here

[update 2006–01–28]
check out Applescripts for tagging iTunes songs via Quicksilver. Very cool.

In this competitive market, different companies are providing cheap web hosting services. While selecting business web hosting services, keep in mind either this company is able to provide in time solution to your business.
