iTunes smart playlists

7. October 2005 Keine Kommentare

Andy Budd has a very awesome tutorial on advanced smart playlists. Definitely worth checking out. And if this is way too complicated for you: check out Smart Playlists.com

btw: my personal hint for all of you using smart playlists and iTunes ratings. Use Applescripts to transfer your ratings to the MP3 file’s ID3tag’s comments section. This way you will never lose those ratings even if you are moving your tunes from mac to mac…

Ⅰ just realized a very useful feature for filling my iPod: you can have multiple playlists inside a folder, but cannot select the folder to be automatically synched with the iPod. However what you can do is create a smart playlist that contains the folder’s contents! So now it is very easy to drag stuff to the iPod without actually changing its „synch settings“. Just drag a new playlist into the synched folder and it will appear on the iPod as soon as the next synch will be done.

iTunes & Podcasts

29. June 2005 1 Kommentar

iTunes finally speaks podcast – but not very fluently yet. There is much eye candy, but it doesn’t just make things nicer it also covers up some very annoying bugs. What Ⅰ do not like:

  • podcasts are very separate from the rest of iTunes. There is no way of creating a smart playlist for podcasts.
  • there is no per-podcast setting
  • there is no way of saying: „take the most current podcast with a hit counter of 0“
  • how do Ⅰ get old podcasts into the system and make them bookmarkable?

iPod Mini problems

6. June 2005 9 Kommentare

Apple 4 GB iPod Mini Silver M9800LL/A Last friday my ipod mini started having problems – turning itself off, for example. Today Ⅰ realized after having the ipod sit on the AC adapter for 2 days it still has no full battery – actually it was dead after about 10 songs.

Ⅰ checked google and found two good facts:

  1. The iPod is still under warranty and this includes dead batteries etc.
  2. A reset might work. Ⅰ will see tomorrow.

[update Montag, 6. Juni 2005] The hardware reset seems to have worked – battery full and functional for 2 h straight.

[update Mittwoch, 8. Juni 2005] Still annyoing. This morning the ipod showed a ⅔ full battery, after one song it complained about no power. Hardware reset → battery display was full again. 10 minutes of playback and the battery was empty, this time for good. That makes it a total of about 2 hours playback since the last recharge, no backlight enabled.

Next try: resetting the whole ipod plus firmware.

[update Donnerstag, 9. Juni 2005] This seems to have fixed all problems.

[update Friday, 10. Juni 2005] Nope, still buggy as hell. Ⅰ just ordered the little box to send it back to apple.

[update Friday June 17th] my replacement iPod just arrived. All is fine again.

What podcasts are you listening to?

22. May 2005 Keine Kommentare

Ⅰ have tried a few podcasts – most of them haven’t survived a third show on my iPod – mostly because they are too long, to boring or Ⅰ am just not in the mood. But one show has won a permanent spot on my feed subscription list: Grape Radio. If you are just merely interested in learning about wine – this is the show to listen to.

iPod manual synch but also keeping „hits“ and „last played dates“ in synch?

28. April 2005 2 Kommentare

This goes out to the lazyweb as Ⅰ seem to be unable to find it via google. Ⅰ just realized how useful the manual synching of an iPod is. As ⅰ have most of my music on my Desktop machine but also some stuff (like podcasts) on my iBook Ⅰ wanted some way to synch the ipod to both machines – which was not possible with smart playlists etc. Now that Ⅰ do it manually this is cool – but somehow Ⅰ do not get my playcounts (hitcounts) and last played info back onto the iTunes library. Is there any way to do this?

Or possibly an easy way to combine manual synching with playlist synching?
