Nokia Media Transfer — new beta out

Nokia has just released a new beta version of their Nokia Media Transfer which integrates iPhoto and iTunes, adds good looking file transfer (no more need for clumsy Apple Bluetooth file transfer utilities) with your Nokia Mobile (supported are N series phones like the N73 or N95).

Where To Watch For Live WWDC ‘07 Updates

Michale Yurechko posted this list of “Where To Watch For Live WWDC ‘07 Updates“. Are you excited, too?

Waiting for my new mobile phone

I just love the hitech gadget market. One day before this year’s macworld iphone announcement I had to renew my contract with O2, hoping for a shipping iphone, but alas, none of that. My contract is up for renewal in 18 months, time enough.

In the previous weeks I had the pleasure of comparing various offers of german mobile providers as well as many different mobile devices.

Nokia N73

My choice, after quite some time of serious searching, fell on the Nokia N73, mainly due to its Symbian OS, nice camera with Zeiss lenses and its brick form factor. The direct competition up till then was the Sony Ericsson “Bond” mobile phone, but somehow the feeling just wasn’t right. Hey we are talking mobile phones here, not tech-features. And SE has just put me off with its super-crappy T290i, which I got for free, but which also is about as slow and uncomfortable to use as it gets. Long live my previous Siemens C55. Much better and with more character.

But then I should have known: never get a first-generation technical device unless necessary. And this applies to the iPhone as well. My advice to all: wait for iPhone 2.0, or at least the first true 3G iPhone, iPhone UMTS or whatever it will be called.

They let Apple be Apple

I am still drooling over yesterday’s announcement of iPhone, the most promising handheld phone/communication device since — say the tricorder. But even after seeing this it is amazing, and unbelievable, that it could have been kept as a secret for so long. OK, people have been speculating for quite some time, but still: as ground-breaking as it is — somebody must have leaked info. It is just too cool a product to not be talking about.

CNN has some take on it, also talking about apple’s previous endeavors with phones like the ROKR (note the Google lucky hit does not even return a Motorola Link ;)).

Some points to take home:

  1. Apple has a serious interest in security, not only because of patents and their competitive advantage, but also because this culture of secrets gives apple the media hype of these events like Macworld.
  2. If you want to work with a company that is as creative, has that much of an ego and a personality — let them be themselves. That’s why Motorola-Apple did not work in the ROKR case, that’s why Cingular-Apple works: “They let Apple be Apple” (and probably also Steve be Steve…)

WWDC 2006 - Student Program

Apple: World Wide Developer Conference -- Student Scholarships

Apple offers free passes to its World Wide Developers conference to students. Especially foreign students, so my experience tells me. All you need to do is get a student developer membership (USD 99 / year - but you also get a one-time discount for hardware purchases: 20% off!!). See the link at “WWDC 2006 - Student Program” for further details. WWDC is a great and fun event, even if you just want to get started in mac osx programmin g (better: cocoa programming); apple offers a variety of classes, courses - if you are quick to sign up. There is also a special student program: an extra day before WWDC starts with introductuory talks, chances to meet apple guys, a job fair… as well as some entertainment program during the week, usually much partying going on! You also get a free T-shirt and possibly a good look at OSX 10.5

Be sure to book your hotel ahead — the motels will be full soon, as will the cheaper hotels! And usually it is not really worth staying outside of town and commuting in every day, especially if you are renting a car (as would be the only option for out-of-country students).

Again: students from Europe are almost guaranteed a scholarship! But if you have any questions, feel free to posta comment or send me an email!
