Referrer Spammers, again.

A great tutorial on anti-referrer-spamming can be found there: Blocking the Referrer Spammer (link via secondsymphony) but it is another one of thise mod_rewrite hacks that requires quite a bit of manual interference. I would rather have a semi-automatioc blacklist that was updated by all participating users as well as moderated. Another good review proposes the “future”:

# perl scripts. This is the future, from what I can tell. Someone is going to write a perl script to solve this problem of referrer spam, maybe. I don’t know what a perl script is. I don’t wanna know, really. I do know that my setup lists a ton of them already active. So they obviously are commonly used on linux/unix servers.

Are there any approaches out there that combine anti-comment spam for blogs like MTBlacklist or others into a referrer-spam-removal system?

Update

There is an excellent solution by Dave (unknowngenius.com), a php based solution - ready for anyone to use - but also enhanced by Dave’s SpamKarma for Wordpress.

Actually, RK is not a wordpress-only solution. You can make it work on any site.
