ImageJ is a free Java application for processing images. You can do the basic stuff of image processing like sharpen/blur, set contrast and colors, convert between different file formats, scale and crop. But you can also measure distances, lengths (even of non-straight objects), areas - you can create histograms of these values, too. Another really useful feature is the analysis of gel pictures - you can even integrate your bands in each lane. Quite useful is an algorithm that counts particles on your images - e.g. to get a size distribution of micelles, polymers or nano-particles.
And last but not least: it is free, extensible and runs on almost any platform!
