Die Freiheit beginnt, wenn man Ã¶konomisch unabhÃ¤ngig ist. High-Tech Eigenproduktion (englisch: High-Tech Self-Providing) hilft uns, weniger auf Geld angewiesen zu sein und mehr Zeit fÃ¼r die wichtigen Dinge im Leben zu haben. Denn mit HTEP ist es mÃ¶glich, Dinge des tÃ¤glichen Lebens im lokalen Rahmen (Gemeinde, Dorf, Stadtteil) selbst herzustellen.

Die Maschinen dazu stehen in einem lokalen Zentrum. Dass funktioniert wie in einem Copyshop: Gegen eine geringe GebÃ¼hr kann selber etwas herstellen. Die Maschinen sind sehr modern und zum grÃ¶ÃŸten Teil computergesteuert, doch ihre Bedienung sehr einfach. Wenn man selbst nicht weiter kommt fragt man einen der Betreiber des Shops, die auch fÃ¼r Wartung und Material sorgen.

A recent post on Treehugger mentions the company BioPower Systems which develops power generation appliances that convert wave energy into electricity. The design is taken from natural elements, as can be seen above in the pictures. Sounds promising, not?

Motor powered by bacteria

It seems like we are finally reaching the fun stage in nanotechnology. Some Japanese scientists have invented a nano motor that is driven by bacteria! The little creatures are sliding along and are pushing the motor, just like the old hamster wheel.

It is funny, as the bacterium in question is called mycobacterium mobile, which can move at a fast 5 micrometers per second; if you think about its size: it moves about 3–4 times its own size per second. A human would thus be moving at 6 meters per second, or 21.6 km per hour, not bad for a critter

backup to gmail?

Reading this article about a failing hard drive as well as this note Ⅰ realized that it would be pretty neat if Ⅰ had an available backup solution off-site (like somewhere on the net) for free – just to store really essential files/folders, maybe a total of 100 MB. There would be the possibility of .mac (which is quite easy and useful but not free); then there is my storage at GMX – accessible via WebDAV, but horribly slow; my webhoster (with too few space), and then there is gmail – free, 2 GB space, searchable, accessible from anywhere with a web connection. And happily all you ever need to store stuff is just a fast connection to your webserver. And a script that does the job for you – maybe with a Cocoa-GUI where you can drag & drop certain files & folders – and whoopie, they get sent to your backup gmail address daily. You can always delete stuff from gmail if necessary – or just create another backup account!.

Has anyone seen this little script/tool for OSX yet?

Jim Roepcke’s weblog: Blogging the O’Reilly Conference Keynote

Ⅰ just found Jim Roepcke’s notes on the 2003 O’reilly conference keynote by Tim O’Reilly – and even though it is hard to actually just read someone’s notes – one thing that strikes me as especially interesting is Tim’s great analysis of apple’s iApps and their problems. Ⅰ have written a rant about what Ⅰ do not like about the current iPhoto – but Tim’s rant was almost two years before that – and his visions are true today – if not even more so.

And (this is quite annyoing) – his points are still valid and most of his criticism is something Ⅰ totally agree with. Yes.

Now where is the developer who vamps up OSX’s address book with some integration of friendster, del.icio.us, etc.? The data is there, on an OS level – all other apps have acces to it! There are soo many things one could do… Ⅰ wish someone would give me enough money for half a year to live on – Ⅰ would code it. And much more.

iTunes & Podcasts

iTunes finally speaks podcast – but not very fluently yet. There is much eye candy, but it doesn’t just make things nicer it also covers up some very annoying bugs. What Ⅰ do not like:

podcasts are very separate from the rest of iTunes. There is no way of creating a smart playlist for podcasts.
there is no per-podcast setting
there is no way of saying: „take the most current podcast with a hit counter of 0“
how do Ⅰ get old podcasts into the system and make them bookmarkable?

o2online – Anruf-Info per SMS, grundsÃ¤tzlich eine feine Sache: als O2-Kunde werde ich informiert, wenn mich jemand erreichen wollte, aber nicht auf die Mailbox gesprochen hat – vorausgesetzt, er hat seine Rufnummer Ã¼bermittelt. Abgesehen davon, daÃŸ dieser Service kostenlos ist fÃ¼r mich. Ich hatte ja auch nicht darum gebeten, aber O2 hat den Dienst irgendwann angestellt.

*Wichtige Hinweise:* Dieser Dienst wird automatisch bis Ende Juni 2005 fÃ¼r alle unsere Kunden aktiviert. Dieser Service funktioniert nur innerhalb Deutschlands. Dem Anrufer wird fÃ¼r die kurze Ansage der normale Minutenpreis fÃ¼r Verbindungen ins deutsche O2-Netz gemÃ¤ÃŸ seinem Tarif berechnet. Kosten entstehen jedoch nur dann, wenn die Rufnummer Ã¼bermittelt und auch eine SMS an den Angerufenen versendet wird. Wenn Sie den Dienst nicht nutzen mÃ¶chte, kÃ¶nnen Sie ihn jederzeit per E-Mail oder Telefon kostenlos ausschalten lassen.

Der Hammer allerdings ist: der Anrufer zahlt die Zeche. Diesmal noch teurer als eine regulÃ¤re SMS (die ja eh schon schweineteuer ist! zumindest verglichen mit fast jeder anderen Art der DatenÃ¼bertragung – gemessen in bit/EUR). Und der Anrufer wird nicht mal darÃ¼ber informiert! Bei jeder popligen 0190‑ oder 018X-Nummer muÃŸ eine kostenlose Ansage kommen, welche Kosten auf der Nummer anfallen. Beim heutigen Vorwahl-Chaos (insbesondere auch eg. der Rufnummer-mitnahme) weiÃŸ ich eh nicht mehr wer denn jetzt bei O2 is und wer nicht? Hat da die RegulierungsbehÃ¶rde geschlafen? Jedenfalls gilt hier auch folgendes Quelle:

Mac Software Requests

Ⅰ was just thinking about how cool it would be to have a lazyweb-like system to get software feature requests out to mac developers (shareware, freeware as well as the folks at infinity loop).

Maybe it would be useful to start like this? Just trackback to here (http://www.dekay.org/blog/archives/mac-software-requests/trackback) and we can collect stuff for anyone to see/use? If Ⅰ find some time Ⅰ may set up a copy of Ben’s Lazyweb for this purpoose, although Ⅰ think there should be quite some other way to do this. Namely the features Ⅰ am missing are:

Tagging. Let each poster include certain tags so the whole request site is easier to browse.
Back-Linking (Lazyweb does this)
Auto-Updating (when someone changes their original posts)
Comments and threaded discussions. Have multiple authors trackback/ping the original entry and then have a threaded view on the main site.
