Das erste Setup mit den Kondensatormikrofonen hatte seine Nachteile. Abgesehen vom Preis braucht man Stative für die Mikros, ist daher recht eingeschränkt in seiner Bewegungsfreiheit und die hohe Qualität der Mikrofone sorgt dafür, dass jedes Rascheln mit aufgenommen wird. Das unangenehmste war aber, dass man lange zum Auf‑ und Abbauen braucht, eine Menge schleppen muss und daher die Spontanität fehlt.

Sein Ziel: Spontan, aber Radioqualität. Nicht unbedingt so üblich, aber für die Podcaster out there sicherlich eine bekannte Fragestellung.

Und, zum Glück für uns alle: Tim verwendet mittlerweile sein MacBook Pro (schätze ich mal, nachdem ihm erst vor einiger Zeit das Powerbook geklaut wurde):

Was mich zu meiner bisherigen und in gewisser Hinsicht wohl auch meiner zukünftigen Aufnahmetechnik bringt: das Live-Recording auf dem Mac. Ich setze dafür Ableton Live ein, was zwar total overpowered ist, sich aber super bedienen lässt (es ist schließlich, der Name spricht Bände, für den Live-Betrieb optimiert) und ein paar Dinge tut, die für das Podcasting segensreich sind.

Es gibt durchaus auch andere Alternativen, mit denen Podcasts am Mac aufgenommen werden können. Nicht zuletzt packt Apple sein GarageBand mit in die iLife-suite rein. Mittlerweile kann GarageBand auch einiges was zumindest so aussieht, als ob es für die Aufnahme des Podcasts auch was taugen könnte, oder dann halt im Nachhinein die Aufarbeitung, Kapitelerstellung und alles was man braucht, um schöne Podcasts über iTunes zu veröffentlichen. Klaro, Apple, alles in einem Sack — äh ja (vor allem die iPhone-Fans unter euch dürften grade schmerzhaft gezuckt haben.).

Wenn wir schon bei der Aufarbeitung sind: Tim meint dazu folgendes:

Ein Podcaster kann da viel Zeit verlieren und ich würde es lieben, wenn ich meine Produktionszeit nach der Aufnahme spürbar verkürzen könnte. Derzeit liegt sie bei ca. der zweifachen Zeit der eigentlichen Aufnahme. Das heißt, dass ein 2-Stunden-Interview mich fast einen ganzen Tag kostet (inkl. Vorbereitung und Nachbereitung). Das ist zu viel.

Also an alle Möchtegernpodcaster: viel Zeit einplanen! Oder auf Qualität verzichten. Und das muß man Tim schon lassen: seine Podcasts sind nicht nur inhaltlich allererste Sahne!

„Expert“ users can also make their own, using tools and technologies such as the quartz composer, other hacks of existing osx technologies, such as having widgets run on the desktop or having screen savers or DVDs run instead of a desktop image. There are countless how-tos available via google.

A whole other universe of possibilities can be opened with extra tools, free‑ or shareware applications that give you an extra edge towards the live-data-display on your desktop. There are definitely many more applications out there than Ⅰ will show in this post, so feel free to comment if you know of any more.

Ⅰ have three main tools running on my desktop:

1. Photostickies
2. Geektool
3. and just (re)discovered: EarthDesk

The first and main tool to get live data from the web onto my desktop is Photostickies, a small and probably lesser known app from DevonTechnologies. makers of DevonThinkPro and DevnAgent (which is part of the current themacpak). It runs as a menu bar widget and allows you to fetch images from your hard disk or the web to your screen. The images can have different refresh times, so you can always stay up-to-date with web-cams, data plots or whatever you like.

My personal setup consists of

• some pictures of my girlfriend, changing every some minutes
• a weather extremes map of germany (back from the days of storms and frost)
• the current traffic conditions in the area (see my recent post „Staumeldungen, richtig gemacht„), published on the web as a GIF
• the current pollen levels in my area, published on the web as a PDF

The second tool that is running is Geektool. Ⅰ am by far not utilizing all capabilities of it, so there are many more options available. What Geektool basically does is run shell scripts periodically and push their output to the desktop. So in the lower right part of the screenshot above you see the output of a regular svn checkout of TextMate bundles. Another script (in this case an AppleScript) tells me the title and artist of the current iTunes song.

Others have been using Geektool e.g. to display web server statistics, log files (console.log or system.log), ruby scripts — anything that can run from the command line. Just be imaginative or use google.

And, completing the screenshot above. All these little images and snippets are set upon a map of europe with current cloud coverage and lighting — produced by EarthDesk.

The trends go on. People begging for money on the net in exchange for public fame, weird acts (of ipod destruction) and for some forms of self mutilation.

Ⅰ guess everything does have its price.
