Software Request: Spotlight tagger à la del.icio.us

17. Mai 2005 1 Kommentar

To all the smart Cocoa-coders out there: How about creating a little app for OSX Tiger that provides an interface like the experimental del.icio.us pop for simple creation of spotlight tags for files & folders?!

The major requirements Ⅰ can think of are:

  1. make it easy to summon the window, key-cut, gesture or context menu (or via quicksilver?)
  2. make addition of tags as easy as selecting already existing tags: see del.icio.us or flickr
  3. save a list of previously used tags in a .txt file somewhere for easy editing (also via quicksilver)
  4. When you are done boast to apple about boosting spotlight’s features.

(see Google Groups : 43 Folders for some more ideas/explanations)

Oh, while you are at it – please add iTunes and iPhoto tagging (with the same tags) as well ;)

OSX: multiple active dictionaries for Cocoa apps?

28. April 2005 2 Kommentare

Is there an easy way to switch the current spelling dictionary in Cocoa apps without doing fancy mouse click work? And at the same time resetting the „spell check while you write highlighting“? Ⅰ frequently need to switch between german and english dictionaries…

Another cool thing would be a) auto discovery of the language or b) a use of both dictionaries at the same time.

Ⅰ have been playing around with CocoAspell for a while, too, but somehow did not like it. The Prefspane was too tedious and settings would not be sticky… and Ⅰ would rather use a „real“ OSX solution than some weird hack for something else ;(

If there are no answers to this: please Apple Engineers consider this as a feature request! ;)

iPod manual synch but also keeping „hits“ and „last played dates“ in synch?

28. April 2005 2 Kommentare

This goes out to the lazyweb as Ⅰ seem to be unable to find it via google. Ⅰ just realized how useful the manual synching of an iPod is. As ⅰ have most of my music on my Desktop machine but also some stuff (like podcasts) on my iBook Ⅰ wanted some way to synch the ipod to both machines – which was not possible with smart playlists etc. Now that Ⅰ do it manually this is cool – but somehow Ⅰ do not get my playcounts (hitcounts) and last played info back onto the iTunes library. Is there any way to do this?

Or possibly an easy way to combine manual synching with playlist synching?

minimize maintenance costs of an OS Ⅹ system

… especially backup and „duplication“. bbum mentioned a while ago (back in 2002) where applications are supposed to be installed on OSX.

Recently, the question was posed — If not/Applications, then where does Apple suggest we install applications? The off the cuff answer is simple; make an Applications/directory in your home account and stick the apps there. Works and works well. That Apple doesn’t automatically create that directory as a part of the default user template would seem to be an oversight on their part

Seems to be a good idea, but then Ⅰ do not have a single place to get to my apps – Ⅰ need to check multiple places to find apps. Or Ⅰ just use Quicksilver – which makes me happy anyways.

But the remaining question is: Is there an easy way to work with an OSX system that still helps you when you need to do a re-install? Right now Ⅰ need to keep track of changes in/Library as well as ~/as well as/Applications – and probably even more folders that Ⅰ do not think about.

Referrer Spammers, again.

1. März 2005 1 Kommentar

A great tutorial on anti-referrer-spamming can be found there: Blocking the Referrer Spammer (link via secondsymphony) but it is another one of thise mod_rewrite hacks that requires quite a bit of manual interference. Ⅰ would rather have a semi-automatioc blacklist that was updated by all participating users as well as moderated. Another good review proposes the „future“:

# perl scripts. This is the future, from what Ⅰ can tell. Someone is going to write a perl script to solve this problem of referrer spam, maybe. Ⅰ don’t know what a perl script is. Ⅰ don’t wanna know, really. Ⅰ do know that my setup lists a ton of them already active. So they obviously are commonly used on linux/unix servers.

Are there any approaches out there that combine anti-comment spam for blogs like MTBlacklist or others into a referrer-spam-removal system?

Update

There is an excellent solution by Dave (unknowngenius.com), a php based solution – ready for anyone to use – but also enhanced by Dave’s SpamKarma for WordPress.
