Getting things done with MacBreakZ

4. Oktober 2006 Keine Kommentare

You may have read my previous review of MacBreakZ, maybe you have heard about RSI or any computer related damages (such as the mouse arm). Today Ⅰ would like to present you a cool and quite different use of this nifty application.

Use it to become more effective and more concentrated!

MacBreakZ has the ability to force you to make breaks in your work, and it is very flexible and customizable this way. You could do a procrastination dash and do work until the next break hits, then go away from your machine, do some stretches and get some coffee… and after that you may procrastinate or… even get back to work.

Ⅰ have set my timer to 21 minutes with a 4 minute break. And Ⅰ find Ⅰ can keep on working for quite longer than if Ⅰ would not do any breaks, or irregular ones. The timing is enough to actually get things done, the break is short enough to not get distracted but get some distance and relaxation.

For me MacBreakZ is much more than just a tool to prevent any RSI-like injury… it does help to make me more productive, more concentrated and thus rich and famous and happy. (Ⅰ guess mostly the latter, but you get the idea…)

Getting back on track?

7. Mai 2006 Keine Kommentare

Over at the 43folders googlegroup the question was asked whether it is possible and feasible to get back onto GTD (by David Allen) after letting life rush over you and getting “lost”.

A very helpful answer was posted by JoshD:

Seriously, the first thing to do is to realize that this is normal; you got caught up with life, and your systems got out of control. It happens, and the real trick is to learn how to stop circling around and blaming yourself, and gather your head back together. (…) And then you stop, take stock, scrape your head back into its container, and tweak your inputs and outputs. Just a tiny bit. Next time, it’ll take less time to feel out of control, and it’ll be less of a mess. And again, and again.

He provides a very good motivation to actually do get back on track and provides some ideas how to do it. If you ever experienced the same problem, if you do feel it could happen to you or if you just want to keep a well written piece of text handy: go there, copy the two postings by JoshD and print them out, make a tattoo or some other permanent form of storage!

Biking to work… a bit of geek/gtd details

4. September 2005 Keine Kommentare

Over at the Google Group „43 Folders“ the discussion has started about „biking to work“:

In light of recent events and the consequences, I’m wondering if some of you lifehack your way around transportation to and from work on a bicycle. Any of your tips are appreciated, especially when it comes to transporting the essentials with you and weathering the elements

And there were quite a bunch of really helpful. motivating answers, just some excerpts:

If you do not have ashower facility at your office, use baby wipes. (…) Most important rule – don’t get hit by a car and always wear a helmet.

Leave a pair of comfy shoes at work, Shoes are heavy to carry. Don’t cycle in your work shoes — they’ll get gross (Ⅰ had SPDs so Ⅰ couldn’t anyway)
